Performance Group
Starting in 2025, Eboracum Early Dance is a multi period performance group that showcases historic dance in York and the surrounding area.
We cover many different periods from Medieval and Tudor to Regency and Victorian! We meet once a month to rehearse and anyone is welcome to join as long as they are happy to commit to rehearsals and the costume requirements.

How does it work?
I’m so glad you’re considering joining our Ebroacum Early Dance Performance Group- Welcome!
The Performance Group is an opportunity to focus in on a particular period of dance and hone your skills with a more intensive course looking at a particular set of dances over several weeks. This will culminate in a public performance at the end of the “season”.
Don’t worry! We don’t take ourselves to seriously! This group is more about about having fun and working on our skills than getting a dance “right” so even if you’re still fairly new to historic dance I encourage you to still come along and give it a go!
What am I committing to?
By joining the Performance group and purchasing a ticket below you are committing to the following:
Attending all the dates shown and letting Lottie know in advance if you cannot attend.
Learning the dances over several sessions and practicing out of class to ensure you are performance ready!
Performing at the end of the “season” at a public event
Providing your own period costume (see next FAQ)
Providing your own transport/ accommodation for the performance (every effort has been made to make these events local and we will aim to help those without transport as much as possible).
What is a “Season”?
A “Season” is what we are calling each set of practices and performance. This means we may be focusing on different periods in different “seasons” and therefore may have different members from “season” to “season”.
You can decide which "seasons” you would like to join but you really should complete each “season” of dance in full.
Each “season” generally encompasses four practice sessions held in the rehearsal space at Monkgate Theatre as well as a final performance in the local area (this may include a festivals or a showcase).
The dates are provided for each “season” down below.
Do I need a costume?
You will need to provide your own period costume appropriate for the era of dance being covered in the “season”. Do not worry- we can provide a whole host of help and advice!
If you don’t have your own costume we can point you in the right direction and help you up as much as possible. Many of our members have costumes to share or rent and York Theatre Royal provides a fabulous costume service for hire.
We are attempting to make more costumes for performance and it is hoped that in future there will be a collective costume wardrobe for new members.
Why do I have to buy a ticket?
Each “season” of dance is £20 (unless otherwise stated) and fees go towards the cost of hall hire for rehearsals. Any excess funds will go towards creating a costume wardrobe for the group and a travel bursary for those in need.
If a “season” has an additional price (for example if the performance requires an expenditure) this will be clearly explained on the ticket below.
Please note in order for this price to remain feasible this does require a minimum number of attendees. If that number cannot be met we may have to reconsider the price but will do so in full discussion with participants.
Will there be other opportunities to perform?
There may be opportunities for further dance performances throughout the year. They will be offered to members of the performance group who may sign up to any they wish.
Dance the Past does not accept responsibility for reorganisation/ cancellation of any performances outside of their control. If a performance is cancelled a suitable alternative will be found if possible, however if an alternative cannot be found the participant will not be entitled to any refund for their “season” fee unless in a circumstance where additional money has been taken for a specific performance expenditure.

York Music Group
Eboracum Early Dance is looking to put together a Historic Dance Music Group here in York! We are looking for a variety of different period instruments with a focus on Medieval and Regency.
The plan is to meet once a month to have an informal get together and a relaxed practice session. As opportunities to perform come up throughout the year more rehearsals will be scheduled but it is envisioned that musicians will work outside rehearsals to ensure they are performance ready!
All performance opportunities will be paid and there will be a level of freedom when putting together the programme (for example if you wish to play a particular piece of music). Period costume is encouraged and (as with the dance performance group) we will help out where possible with costumes and transportation to events.
