Festival of Ideas: Dirty Dancing: A Workshop of Scandalous Dance- Sunday 8th June

£10.00

Sunday 8th June, 1-4pm, The Mount School, York.

Throughout history the way we move our bodies to music has always been a source of contention. Whilst dancing historically was widely regarded as a way to demonstrate grace and elegance it was still often decried as evil or immoral by certain parts of the community.

In this workshop we're going to learn some of the most scandalous dances in history. Join me as we take a trip through time to find those dances that broke boundaries and shocked polite society.

Learn dances such as:

  • La Volta;

  • The Couples Waltz;

  • The Early Tango;

  • The Charleston;

  • The Animal dances of early Ragtime; and

  • The Jitterbug/ Jive.

This will really be a speedrun through history as we look at how dances has changed over time.

Join me as we look at where these dances came from, what they signified and how they changed the world.  This workshop is accompanied by a corresponding talk on the history of scadalous dances. You can register to join this free talk here.
